Planning for success

The well known phrase 'if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail', attributed to Benjamin Franklin, shows great insight.  What's great about this is that we know that by making a good, well-thought-out plan, we are more likely to succeed. We all want to be the best that we can be and planning is key.

The very process of planning is a creative one. It allows our thoughts and ideas to develop, and for us to dream of what could be. Essentially, a  plan should facilitate a commitment to take action, and it requires a strategic approach. A good plan will not only help us be more productive, it will also enable us to embark on new ventures and to make significant changes in life.

Here's 7 reasons why making a plan helps you succeed

Provides clarity - A clear plan will help you think through what you want to achieve, and to know what you need to get there. Being clear on what steps you need to take will reduce overwhelm and enable you to follow through on specific actions.

Helps with motivation A key ingredient to success is being motivated and actually taking action! Having a plan with clearly defined tasks will keep procrastination at bay. It is much easier to be motivated when you know what needs to be done.

Promotes an intentional attitudeEffective planning promotes an attitude that is positive and focused.  When you are committed to following a plan through, you are moving forward in a particular direction, towards a clear goal.

Making decisionsTaking time to think through your options, and making informed choices, allows you to make considered decisions. A plan is a chosen direction which is specific and realistic, leading towards success.

Review progressAn effective plan has reviews built in to help you reflect on progress. This will allow you to make any necessary changes, monitor your goals and encourage you to keep moving forward.

Provides accountability - Being accountable is a key ingredient to success. This is because it provides motivation, focus and a reason to take action. If you are not directly accountable to anyone, then it may help to tell someone your plans.

Saves time - A lack of time is often the reason which prevents you from starting new projects or making changes. Investing time in planning will actually save time, therefore it is well worth the investment.

Summary

Spending time planning can seem difficult, especially when you are busy. However, making time to plan will help you to focus on what is important to you, know what you need to do and help you achieve your goals.  If you want to succeed then planning is key.
