Take time to reflect
There is something exciting about the start of a new year. A time for new opportunities, good intentions and a feeling of enthusiasm. It can be tempting to get on with the year without taking time to acknowledge the year which has been. In fact, taking time to stop and reflect is important in order for you to acknowledge achievements, recognise your learning, and be in a good position to plan for a new year.
Here are 5 compelling reasons why you should reflect on the past year
Understand how you spent your time - Reviewing the past year will help you identify how effectively your time was spent. Consider how you spent time at work, leisure and with loved ones. How well did you look after yourself? Also, understand what was neglected and anything you could have done less of.
Celebrate your accomplishments - It can be easy to forget what you have accomplished when you are busy. But it is important to acknowledge your achievements and to celebrate! The result will be greater confidence and for you to continue developing your skills.
Understand what you enjoyed, energised and drained you - Recognising what situations, practices or people have drained you will allow you to make changes to prevent this from reoccurring. Knowing what gives you energy will help you to make sure you do more of what you enjoy.
Reflect on what you have learnt - Reflection is an important aspect of the learning process. Identifying what has not worked well, and exploring why, will enable you to take appropriate steps to move forward. Rather than focusing on failures, identify any changes you wish to make as a positive aspect of the review process.
Improve on effectiveness and be more successful - Reflecting on the past year and carrying forward your learning will make you more effective. This will take you forward into a more successful and productive year.
